Interior drain tile installation in Green Bay
Interior drain tile is the workhorse repair for Green Bay basements. It relieves the pressure red lake clay creates without excavating the yard — and it can be installed in February.

How it is installed
A channel is cut in the concrete floor around the inside perimeter, roughly eight to twelve inches wide, down to the footing. Perforated pipe is laid in washed stone along that channel, sloped toward a sump basin, and the floor is poured back over it. Water arriving at the wall or the cove joint drops into the stone, runs to the basin and is pumped out.
Wisconsin is unusually specific about this. SPS 321.17 sets the standard — pipe of at least 3 inches inside diameter, on at least 2 inches of coarse aggregate, covered on the top and the face away from the dwelling with at least 12 inches more, terminating in a sump pit. A system built to that spec is not a proprietary product, it is code, and you can hold a quote against it.
Why interior rather than exterior
Cost and disruption, mostly. Interior work does not touch the yard, the deck, the driveway or the landscaping, and it does not require access for excavation equipment down the side of a house that may be four feet from the neighbour's.
The climate argument is specific to here. Exterior excavation to a 48-inch footing is impractical in frozen ground, so exterior work is effectively April to November. Interior drain tile can be installed in January. When a basement starts taking water during the February thaw, interior work is not merely the cheaper option — it is frequently the only one available until spring.
The trade-off is honest: interior systems manage water after it has reached the wall rather than keeping it out of the wall. For a sound block or poured wall that is entirely adequate. For a wall that is deteriorating or actively moving, exterior work or stabilization has to be part of the conversation.
Why Brown County soil drives this
Brown County sits on the Kewaunee-Manawa-Poygan soil association — a thin silty cap over calcareous red clay laid down as lake sediment by Glacial Lake Oshkosh and the Green Bay Lobe. That red clay runs roughly 5 to 20 feet thick across most of the county and is among the least permeable material a foundation can be built into.
The Manawa and Poygan members of that association are rated somewhat poorly and poorly drained — they hold water near the surface instead of passing it down, so a wet spring loads the outside of a foundation wall for weeks at a time rather than days. A saturated clay backfill can exert well over 1,000 lb of lateral force per linear foot against a block wall — enough to bow an 8-inch wall inward with no visible cause outside.
The Fox River mouth and the bay shore keep the water table shallow across the lower East and West sides, and the flat lake plain gives water nowhere to run once the clay above it has taken all it can hold. In the older core neighborhoods the problem compounds — green bay's older neighborhoods — astor, whitney park, navarino, olde north — are dominated by pre-1940 housing on block or rubble foundations built before drain tile was ever required.
Interior Drain Tile questions
What does interior drain tile cost in Green Bay?
Interior perimeter drain tile in Brown County runs $5,000 to $15,000 for a full perimeter, including the sump. Partial runs on one or two walls cost proportionally less, and a finished basement adds demolition and rebuild to the number.
Does the concrete floor get destroyed?
A channel around the perimeter is cut and re-poured — typically eight to twelve inches wide. The middle of the floor is untouched. The new concrete is visible as a band around the edge of the room, which matters if the floor is finished and matters very little if it is not.
How long does interior drain tile last?
The stone and pipe should outlast the house — there are no moving parts and nothing to wear. The sump pump is the consumable, at roughly seven to ten years in this corridor, where run-hours are heavily concentrated into the spring thaw. Budget for the pump, not the tile.
Will it work if my walls are also bowing?
It will keep the basement dry, and it will not stop the wall moving. Those are separate problems with separate fixes, and a bowing wall needs stabilization in the same scope. What drainage does contribute is removing the hydrostatic load that is causing the movement in the first place, so the two repairs work together rather than one substituting for the other.

A wet Green Bay basement is a thaw problem before it is a rain problem. Fifty-five inches of snow melts into ground that has been frozen since December, and the red lake clay underneath cannot take it.

Digging to the outside of the wall is the most thorough repair there is. Wisconsin's 48-inch frost rule makes it deeper, costlier and strictly a warm-season job.
